Reasons to choose Gigaclear

  • Ultrafast broadband - few providers in the UK can match Gigaclear's fastest offering
  • Slower options available - if you don't need 900Mb, there are slower (and cheaper) options available
  • Guaranteed price - your monthly price is guaranteed for the length of the minimum contract term
  • Mesh network Smart WiFi - The faster tier Ultrafast 300 and Hyperfast 900 products come with Smart WiFi with an additional mesh network WiFi node as standard
  • Speeds should be as advertised - as a fibre-to-the-home service, the real world speeds should come close to matching the advertised rate
  • Fast rural access - Gigaclear is considerably faster than most other rural providers
  • Very impressive upload speeds - the upload speeds match the download speeds: that's 900Mb on the fastest package!
  • Free customer support - support is available by phone 24 hours a day
  • No landline needed - you don't need a landline to sign up for Gigaclear
  • Customer satisfaction - Gigaclear are rated by their customers among the very best for speed, satisfaction, service and reliability

Possible downsides

  • Very limited coverage - Gigaclear is only available to around 65,000 homes (although the target is over 300,000 by the end of 2021)
  • Complex installation - installation involves a lot more than just plugging in a cable, and is expensive for the 5% of customers who don't qualify for standard install
  • More expensive than rivals - although the service is likely to be faster than its rivals, it's also likely to be more expensive
  • No short contracts - the minimum contract is 18 months on all packages, with one month's notice when you leave
  • Annual CPI increase - Prices for broadband (and any other addons, such as line, call plans and call charges) increase by the Consumer Price Index in October of each year plus 3.5%, and then each October onwards

Features at a glance

  • Averages range from 30Mb to 900Mb symmetric - that's 900Mb download AND upload!

  • 18 month contracts as standard, 1 month notice to leave

  • Truly unlimited usage allowances on all packages

  • Activation usually £30, standard installation is free but 5% of customers liable for professional installtion costs, subject to no obligation survey

  • UK-based support line open 8am to 8pm all week, an alternative support provider is used for enquiries outside these hours

  • Smart WiFi with an additional network node provided as standard on Ultrafast 300 and Hyperfast 900, this forms a seamless mesh network in your home giving better WiFi coverage

An absolute disgrace of a company. How do you get a company, to which you pay for a service , to fix a phone line when it's not working? The answer is you can't when it's Gigaclear. I'm disabled, have been without a phone which I rely on for 4 days, they keep telling me to re-boot which doesn't work and won't call me back on my mobile which is pay-as-you-go and costing a fortune. I'm distressed and vulnerable and they don't care!

Booked two all day appointments. The second after the first no show.
A no show on each occasion. No message from Gigaclear to give a reason or say they weren'tcoming. Sat in all day. Two whole days of my life wasted waiting for these clowns who haven't the decency to inform you. A big sales team but no customer service or commitment.

Can’t rate the broadband as I simply never got an install. Mis sold is the polite way of saying what I’d like to say.
If they can’t supply they should have said so at the start, but instead they made promises and then didn’t deliver, strange as my neighbour has gigaclear and had no issues, but life goes on and I’ve learnt a lesson, I’d advise the first time they fail to install as promised I’d not bother keep trying, just move on.

This appears to be a company that when it works, it’s brilliant but if it does not it terrible. The customer service people make all the right noises and say the right things in a roundabout way to make you believe it’s not them but you. I had to buy a special cable to download the speed I receive from the box. Then switch all TV’s, printers, phone and devices off that may use the internet. And so on, nothing works. I still don’t receive all my emails, can’t connect to server and message not downloaded from the server is the message of the day. Streaming on the TV is patchy and particularly bad with you tube. And they will not fix the problem as they maintain it’s me not them or the router. They made me call the router people as well and check for channels ……. I can’t wait to leave once the contract finishes

If possible, I would rate zero star for the service. The engineer did not show up on the installation day without any reason, also no notification at all. After I chased the customer service 5 times, they suggested a new installation date on end of April, that's insane. Really disappointed, not recommend this broadband service provider.

We live in a small village .Gigaclear is our only option for full fibre broadband. Have been waiting since last September, have had 4 cancellations , only 2 with prior notice.
Today Gigaclear confirmed the installation, Incontacted them twice this morning to check it would go ahead. By 3pm I ran get and was told it had been cancelled due to Health and Safety issues, but this had been flagged up last October during a supposed site visit.
I have read other reviews and people have had the same problems.
The only choice we have is to pursue this or give up.
After reading the reviews it looks as though giving up is the best option.

Beware of this company.

They will charge you full price even if they can't provide the service, and refuse to refund you.

I recently had no internet (due to a fault on their side) for 5 days in a 2 week period. They still expect full payment for the month, which to any reasonable person or company is clearly completely unreasonable.

Their justification is that it was 2 days and 3 days, and they only refund if it's over 3 days, which is convenient for them. Using this logic you could have internet for just 8 days out of 31 and they would still expect full payment.

I was always an advocate of Gigaclear in the past, but am firmly a detractor now I've seen how they treat customers with any issue.

Is it time to upgrade to ultrafast broadband?

Posted by Andy Betts on in FeaturesTrueSpeedSkyEEVirgin MediaVodafoneCommunity FibreGigaclear

With the upgrade to our broadband infrastructure being accelerated, ultrafast broadband is becoming more accessible with each passing day.

So you might now be wondering, is it time to upgrade to a faster deal? But what exactly do you get, and what are the benefits to ultrafast broadband? Let's take a look.

What is ultrafast broadband?

Anything with a download speed over 100Mb can be classified as ultrafast.

There are a lot of different technologies that are able to deliver these faster speeds, including upgraded street cabinets that use the G.fast technology, Virgin Media's cable and fibre network, and the growing number of full fibre, or fibre-to-the-home, services that are being rolled out across the country.

Coverage is still quite patchy, but a majority of UK homes can get an ultrafast service from at least one provider, with as many as 59% able to get speeds of at least 300Mb.

Do you need ultrafast broadband?

While faster is very much better, the normal fibre broadband connections that most of us still use are extremely capable.

A 67Mb connection is good enough to allow you watch Netflix or Amazon Prime in 4K, and can download a 1GB file in just a touch over two minutes. You shouldn't experience too much in the way of problems, even with a fairly busy household.

But remember, your available bandwidth is divided between all the devices connected to your network. The more devices you add, the more likely you are to experience slowdowns on some of your tasks - your videos drop to a lower resolution, your downloads take longer, and so on. Ultrafast broadband reduces the chances of this happening, and the faster your connection, the less likely it gets. It allows you to connect more devices, and more people, without putting any limits on what they can do.

So while you might not have a desperate need for ultrafast, right now, there are lots of good reasons why it will benefit you.

  • Your browsing in general will speed up. You'll notice it especially with complex web apps like Google Docs, or photo heavy sites. You get a shorter ping rate, too, which means better online gaming.
  • You will experience much faster downloads. This isn't just files you're actively downloading on your laptop, but other things like those Windows 10 updates that happen in the background, video game downloads, and even Ultra HD movies you load on your Sky Q box. For reference, a 5GB file will take over 10 minutes to download on a 67Mb connection, and just 42 seconds with gigabit broadband.
  • Along with faster downloads, you also get much faster uploads. Full fibre broadband is symmetric, which means the upload and download speeds are the same. If you work from home, especially, this could be a huge benefit.
  • Ultrafast broadband is future-proof. Internet use on the Openreach network, which covers most UK broadband suppliers, more than doubled throughout 2020. Yes, it was driven in part by lockdown, but it was also the continuation of a long established trend that's unlikely to change any time soon.
  • In some cases, ultrafast broadband might also be your best option. Lots of rural areas, as well as new build homes, have frankly terrible options when it comes to fibre-to-the-cabinet broadband - and some don't have it at all. But full fibre is independent of the old copper-based network, so you might increasingly find that it's your best, and maybe, only choice.

Can you get ultrafast broadband?

The provider with the widest ultrafast broadband coverage throughout the country is Virgin Media. They're available to approaching two-thirds of the UK and they offer speeds up to an average 630Mb. Vodafone, EE and Sky are among the other big providers that can offer ultrafast broadband at varying speeds.

There's also a big growth in the number of specialist full fibre providers, some focussing on specific regions. These include Community Fibre in parts of London and TrueSpeed in the South West, while Gigaclear target rural areas in 22 counties across the Midlands and south of England. Coverage is improving all the time, as are the range of options available to everyone.

More than one in five homes can now get full fibre broadband

Posted by Andy Betts on in NewsGigaclearVirgin MediaTrueSpeed

UK broadband is getting faster. The average download speeds broadband-using Brits are getting has risen by a quarter over the last year, while more than one in five of us can now access a full fibre connection.

Those are the big findings in new research from Ofcom, which also shows that gigabit-capable broadband is now available across well over a third of the country - and it has grown by nearly 40% in just three months.

The spring update to the industry watchdog's Connected Nations study has shown how rapidly the UK's ultrafast broadband infrastructure is developing.

As of January this year, nearly 11 million homes - some 37% - were able to access a gigabit-capable service. That's up from 7.9 million last September. This change was driven largely by a major upgrade to Virgin Media's cable network, which brought these faster speeds to an extra 2.8 million homes.

Full fibre coverage is now up to 21% - nearly six million homes - with the growth coming from the larger infrastructure operators such as the BT-owned Openreach, as well as smaller, more targeted local providers like Gigaclear and TrueSpeed.

The picture is also improving for people outside of these coverage areas. Ultrafast broadband, which Ofcom define as having download speeds above 300Mb, is now available to 17.7 million homes (61%), while 96% of the country is able to get an internet connection of at least 30Mb.

Access to full fibre May 2020 September 2020 January 2021
UK 14% 18% 21%
England 13% 16% 19%
Northern Ireland 49% 56% 63%

Access to gigabit-capable services September 2020 January 2021
UK 27% 37%
England 25% 36%
Northern Ireland 56% 69%
Scotland 42% 44%
Wales 19% 28%

However, there are still some areas that are poorly served, with 650,000 homes unable to get a fixed line internet connection with download speeds of at least 10Mb. That's a little over two percent overall, with Northern Ireland having the highest proportion of underserved homes. Some of these homes may have access to alternative broadband services.

Access to 10Mb services May 2020 September 2020 January 2021
UK 98% 98% 98%
England 99% 99% 99%
Northern Ireland 94% 94% 94%
Scotland 97% 97% 97%
Wales 97% 97% 97%

In separate research, Ofcom also found that the average download speed users of fixed home broadband were getting in November 2020 was 80Mb - a massive increase of 25% compared to the year before. Upload speeds - essential for gaming, video calling and working from home - fared even better, rising by over 50% to an average 21.6Mb. The changes were largely the result of increased availability of ultrafast broadband packages, and happened in spite of the lockdown that caused a massive spike in the amount of bandwidth we all used.

The Government's aim is to roll out gigabit-capable broadband nationwide over the next few years. BT recently confirmed their intention to invest £12 billion into the plan, while the Government also announced the first part of their spending to cover harder to reach rural areas.

Gigaclear Broadband Buyers Guide - Is Gigaclear right for you?

Can I get Gigaclear broadband?

Gigaclear are a rural broadband provider. The service currently covers around 65,000 premises across a dozen counties, with funding to expand across other parts of the UK in future. Their target is to be available to more than 300,000 homes by the end of 2021.

Gigaclear is a fibre-to-the-home network. This is different to most fibre offerings in the UK. The fibre cables run directly into your property, and can lead to a much faster and more reliable service.

Most fibre providers in the UK use fibre-to-the-cabinet. Here, the fibre connection runs as far as your nearest street cabinet, and a copper cable is used from there to your home. This can result in you achieving far less than the advertised speeds, especially if you live a long way from the street cabinet (as is very often the case in rural areas). Such slowdowns should not be an issue with Gigaclear's service, although its coverage is much more limited.

Use our postcode checker to find out if Gigaclear is available in your village. If it isn't you can register your interest via the Gigaclear website. However, for the service to be considered for installation in your area it will need significant interest from the rest of your community, and you'll need to be within 3km of existing fibre infrastructure or another village that already has access to Gigaclear.

What packages are available?

Gigaclear have four fibre broadband packages available for residential customers. The main difference between the options is the speeds they offer and the addition of Smart WiFi on the two fastest tiers.

The packages are:

  • Superfast 30 - unlimited fibre broadband with download and upload speeds averaging at 30Mb
  • Ultrafast 100 - unlimited fibre broadband with download and upload speeds averaging at 100Mb
  • Ultrafast 300 with Smart WiFi - unlimited fibre broadband with download and upload speeds averaging at 300Mb
  • Hyperfast 900 with Smart WiFi - the fastest package offers an unlimited service, with upload and download speeds averaging at 900Mb

All the packages are on a minimum 18 month contract with a guarantee that the price will not rise during that period. There is an activation fee, and 5% of customers will have to pay £120 installation, subject to a no obligation survey. Because installation for fibre-to-the-home services are more complex, these fees are somewhat higher than you'd normally expect to pay.

Smart WiFi is provided as standard on the faster products, this gives you an additional WiFi node to extend your network coverage to the furthest parts of a typical 3-bedroom house, you also have the option to pay extra to add additional nodes, up to 3 total in addition to the router, so that larger homes may also benefit. The Smart WiFi technology produces a mesh network, meaning that regardless of whether you connect to the router or a node, the same password and network ID are used, so you can seamlessly move around the home without needing to re-connect to a different access point.

If you prefer to combine your broadband and phone into a single bundle you can add a voice over IP (VOIP) calls deal from Vonage. This uses your internet connection to make and receive calls, but you can usually keep your existing phone number. The main downside to a VOIP service is that it won't work if your internet is down, including if there's a power cut.

Which package should I choose?

Unlike many fibre providers, the deals from Gigaclear offer vastly different speeds, and significantly different prices, too. Choose carefully!

Superfast 30 is the entry level package, and the 30Mb speed is in the same ballpark as a basic fibre service from most other providers. However, due to the fact that this is a fibre-to-the-home service the performance should be more consistent, and the upload speed - also 30Mb - a lot faster. This will handle streaming, gaming and downloading for all the family, and is likely to be fast enough for most households.

Ultrafast 100 is comparable with ultrafast products from the other providers who are able to offer these speeds, and will handle anything you can throw at it. Want to watch Netflix in 4K on more than one device? That won't be a problem!

Ultrafast 300 with Smart WiFi is faster than you'll find from almost any other provider, and can do everything that Ultrafast 100 does, with a bit more oomph, and should future proof your speed needs for quite a while. Plus you get all the benefits of Smart WiFi's mesh network support and additional WiFi node as standard.

And then there's the Hyperfast 900 with Smart WiFi. With incredible download and upload speeds of 900Mb it ranks along the fastest broadband services available in the UK, and faster than even most providers in urban areas. To be honest, it's overkill for most home users, especially considering the hefty price and everything Ultrafast 300 with Smart WiFi gives you. But if you have specific requirements - you work from home and need to share large files, for example - then this will do the job.

Before you sign up you should also make sure you're clear about the installation process. Installation requires a cable to be run from the fibre pot on the boundary of your property to the router inside your house. This means a hole will need to be drilled in your wall, and for concrete, paving or garden to be dug up outside. This will all be reinstated by approved installers, but installation can be quite expensive as a result. You can choose to install it yourself if you have the tools and know-how.

Of course, the main consideration with Gigaclear is whether it's even available in your village. If it isn't you can register your interest on their website. Encourage your neighbours to do the same, if you can. And if it is, check that you don't have other, cheaper options available to you - unless you really need that speed!

Points to consider before you choose

  • Is the service available in your area?
  • How fast are the other broadband services available to you?
  • Do you need fast upload speeds?
  • Does your home tend to have WiFi coverage issues that Smart WiFi would address?
  • Are you happy to take out a 18 month contract?
Compare all Gigaclear packages

What do I get when I sign up?

It's good to know what you're getting when you sign up to a broadband provider, so you can budget for any extras you may need. In the case of Gigaclear, it's a strictly no-frills service.

  • Free wireless router - All users get a free Gigaclear powered by Linksys Wi-Fi router designed specifically for fibre-to-the-home broadband.
  • Smart WiFi node on Ultrafast 300 and Hyperfast 900 - The faster products come with a Smart WiFi node (upgradable to 3 total nodes in addition to the router) that form a mesh network to seamlessly cover areas of weak WiFi signal within your come, typical 3 to 5 bedroom homes can be covered depending on the number of nodes.
  • Installation kit - If you opt to install the service yourself you'll get an installation kit including instruction guide and a cable up to 50m in length. If you need a longer cable you have to pay for it.
  • Parental controls - The free parental control software enables you to restrict what sites your children can view
  • Customer support - Free customer support is available by phone, 24 hours a day (via a standard rate number). Email support is also available.

What are the benefits of Gigaclear broadband?

So what are the best reasons for considering broadband from Gigaclear?

  • Fast rural internet access - Internet services in rural areas is notoriously terrible. If Gigaclear is available in your area it's all but guaranteed to be the best you can get, by some margin.
  • Unbeatable speeds - The Hyperfast 900 package is as fast as you can get in the UK, even compared to services you can get in big cities. Better still, fibre-to-the-home broadband should deliver the advertised speeds.
  • Very fast upload speeds - With upload speeds that match the download speeds, the service is ideal if you share a lot of large files, or make video calls.
  • Smart WiFi mesh network as standard - On faster products the first node in a mesh network that will cover weak WiFi signal spots in your home is provided for free, with an easy upgrade path to adding two more nodes to the Smart WiFi network as needed.
  • Guaranteed price - Your monthly price is guaranteed for the length of the 18 month minimum contract term, unlike many other providers who may institute price increases at any time with only 30 days notice.
  • Standalone broadband - The Gigaclear service doesn't use a phone line. They won't sell you one, and you don't need to take one from another company if you don't need it (although you will if you do).
  • Unlimited access - All of Gigaclear's broadband packages come with no limits on the amount of data you can download.
  • Free tech support - Free customer support is available by phone whenever you need it.
  • Highly rated - Gigaclear are a highly rated broadband provider. They rank best for speed, and in the top three for satisfaction, service and reliability.Isps

What are the drawbacks of Gigaclear?

No service is perfect, so what are the possible downsides of choosing Gigaclear?

  • More expensive - Gigaclear brings ultrafast broadband to rural areas, but you do pay a premium for this.
  • Difficult installation - Fibre-to-the-home is a lot more difficult to install than the more common fibre-to-the-cabinet, and may even require concrete or paving to be dug up in your front garden. In most cases this is free, but 5% of customers will need full installation. You can do it yourself if you have the skills, while the price for using an approved installer starts at £120 (subject to a no obligation survey).
  • Very limited availability - Although Gigaclear is continuing to expand into more communities, availability is currently still very limited.
  • Few extras - The service comes with minimal extras.
  • Telephone service requires broadband - You can add a VOIP phone service to your Gigaclear plan, if you need it. However, this only works where broadband is available. You cannot make calls - even emergency calls - when there's a power cut.
  • Annual CPI increases apply - Prices for broadband (and any other addons, such as line, call plans and call charges) increase by the Consumer Price Index in October of each year plus 3.5%, and then each October onwards
