Awful internet and telephone provider. Customer service is non existence, you have 5 ways to contact them, and none of them get a response. Been with them for 11 months, will never touch with a barge pole. They are using covid as an excuse for everything. Slow, poor quality product as well.

Worst service ever! I received the router and connected the whole thing; the light showed red and I followed the advice on how to reset the thing several times. It never worked; not for a second I had access to Internet with this provider. I called them and was put on hold forever. I emailed them and they never replied. I decided to cancel after 5 weeks of no service. I asked them how I could return the router. No reply. Now they are requesting that I pay them for the service they did not provide. I refuse. They are sending threatening letters telling me that a debt collector will come (in the middle of a pandemic lockdown) and they will take me to court. I told them to skip the collector and go straight for the court so that I can present my evidence and have my say to someone who will actually listen!! Big, big scam!! Do not say I didn't warn you.....
Upgraded in Jan 2021 but still speed and coverage really poor. On Zoom calls often we are closed out and range really poor - first floor reception in and out constantly - wish I’d gone back to BT
When I moved house I gave them plenty of notice on moving in day they had no knowledge and had to wait 3 weeks for open reach to connect the line.
I work from home with no apology or any contact.
I check speeds often and never as promised in the contract.
And just to add insult realised they put the price up with no contact would definatly avoid.

I wanted to renew and after making numerous attempts to discuss and when I eventually made contact was referred to no fewer than three advisors I was told I would have to pay a further £10 per month in line with the fibre fixed price which

I warn against this company when it comes to the Internet in the SEZ. During the day everything works fine, but from 18-24 the internet drops to 1Mb, the SSE provider is vodafone, which chokes the internet during these hours. It's been over 4 months now and nothing reacts, kids can't play or watch YouTube. Forget watching a movie on Netflix in the evening.
I do not know what they write, they have such blockades that you will not do anything, I feel like I was in the 1990s, then such speeds were achieved
Seriously the worst internet provider ever - no contact - put the price up 10 pounds without any notice - internet is unstable down to 6-7mbs most of the time but paying for 70mbs - no customer service - unethically using Covid as a reason to be terrible - basically a bottom feeder of a company
Awful provider. I originally signed up with them because they had a signup offer going with British Airways for bonus Avios if you sign up for their Fibre package. I figured SSE were middle of the pack so how bad can they be and I could use the Avios so signed up.
I got an e-mail saying SSE will take care of the switch from my previous provider after a month or so. A month passes and.. nothing. I called them up and get told they don't know what happened but they'll look into it and get in touch. I received an automated text message saying "Unfortunately our automated system was unable to place your order" and the new go live date would be another two weeks.
So 6 weeks later I have Wifi and wait for my bonus Avios. Crickets.. So I call them up again and they say I should contact British Airways. I call British Airways and they say I should contact SSE. I assume the bonus Avios weren't honoured because they were "unable to place" my broadband order. Anyway, getting those Avios was a lost cause but at least I had Wifi.
Spotty Wifi that is fast at times, slowed to a crawl at others. Once I started home working during the pandemic, it became clear that the SSE fibre broadband couldn't handle Skype calls longer than 20 minutes before cutting out altogether.
14 months into my contract, I moved houses. I was told by SSE that they would switch my broadband to my new address in two weeks and an engineer would not be needed. Two weeks comes and goes and no internet. I call them up and they say "Oh, we can only get an engineer out to you a week from now so your broadband will be switched to your new address then..." Three weeks without internet has been very constructive for my home working!
In conclusion, the broadband speed and reliability is worse than I had with Sky or BT. SSE's communication and customer service is awful. And the main incentive for switching to SSE in the first place wasn't honoured. Can't wait for the 18 month period to be over so I can switch to another provider.
Confused to read all these bad reviews only problem I had was the router not being delivered on time other than that the internet has been perfect not slow at all...can watch netflix amazon prime etc. with ease and not that expensive per month
Wow, what can I say. Worst broadband provider ever and incompetent liars. My mum was hitting 2 mbps max, which isn't good for me WFH because I use video conferencing. We called to ask them to leave or to fix the issue. Instead, my mother (her mistake) signed up to their fibre (thinking it would be quicker than moving). My mum asked several times if we could leave no hassle if we were happy - he said yes, within 14 days no strings attached AND that it would be done within a week.
In the meantime, they sent an engineer to look at the phone line as that wasn't working. The engineer fixed that and we asked him about why we had only 2mbps and he did some fiddling and fixed it so we were at least getting 9mbps.
Low and behold we call them after a week because we didnt get an email telling us they switched us (as promised, alongside new contract). No contact. We call them and they it will take another week.
2 weeks later (time we could have switched to a different provider) we had to call again. They had switched it, but we were getting NO internet now.
We have been on the phone to them for four days straight. No internet for me as a consultant means I lose out on money. They have not been able to fix the issue and so we tried to cancel, but it turns out the salesman lied to us: we cannot cancel our contract. As I said, my mum asked twice. Remember, he also lied about if they could fix the previous 2mbps and said no - had they done that, we could have at least 9mbps better than nothing.
Disgusting company, horrendous sales team. One lady we spoke to was helpful but that doesn't solve the problem. Wifi is dropping constantly rendering it nearly unusable.
Now they are saying we can only cancel if they don't fix it within a 'reasonable' time. What's a reasonable time to you? Because for me it is unreasonable that I still cannot work 4 days after making a complaint.

The industry watchdog's latest Online Nation report shows that a combination of factors have caused internet use to surge to record levels, up by almost an hour a day in less than two years.
Inevitably, the coronavirus lockdown was part of the cause - the Zoom video conferencing app, for instance, has grown by nearly 2000%, from 659 thousand UK users to over 13 million in just four months. But it's not just that. The popularity of streaming services continues to grow, plus there's the emergence of video sharing sites like Twitch and TikTok. The latter has moved well beyond its initial teen user base, with 12.9 million UK adults now joining in.
Even as the lockdown begins to ease, it's unlikely that our online activity is going to decline. So the question is, is your broadband connection up to the demands of this "new normal"?
Signs that your service might be struggling include:
Downtime - we know that the internet infrastructure held up remarkably well during the lockdown, but if your connection keeps dropping, or you're being left without service for hours at a time, it's often a sign that it might be time to look elsewhere.
Slow downloads or uploads - your download and upload speeds will slow down when you've got more people sharing your connection at the same time. Speed problems can be especially noticeable when your usage patterns change - like when you're working from home and sharing large files or connecting to your office server.
Poor video performance - nothing ruins a boxset binge more than buffering, or even just seeing the picture quality plummet. Both are signs that your broadband can't keep up with the demands of your chosen streaming TV service.
Laggy gaming or video calls - speed problems can also ruin the picture or sound quality in your video calls, and render online games unplayable. Occasional lag is to be expected, but if you keep seeing it it might be time for an upgrade.
The best broadband upgrades
So what should you look for in an upgrade? Try and prioritise what you need. That could be a faster service generally, or more specifically faster uploads. Or perhaps a more reliable service, or better customer support.
The obvious upgrade, if you haven't already made it, is to go from standard broadband to fibre. An entry level fibre deal will triple your download speed and should only cost a few pounds extra each month. If you're upgrading to a new deal with your existing provider you might even be able to negotiate a better offer. Plusnet and SSE currently offer the cheapest fibre broadband deals.
The next step is from the basic fibre (around 36Mb) to the higher end fibre, with speeds around 63Mb. Vodafone and TalkTalk have the cheapest deals at this faster speed.
If even that isn't enough, you can get over 100Mb speeds from a number of ISPs. The most widely available are from Virgin Media, who offer speeds up to 516Mb on average. Other big name providers like Vodafone and BT also offer ultrafast packages, but only in certain areas. These faster speeds will give you much better upload speeds as well as downloads.

Can I get SSE?
SSE are best known as an energy provider but their broadband services are available to everyone. You don't need to be an energy customer, and you also don't need to be located in the regions covered by their energy services.
SSE broadband is available wherever there's a BT telephone exchange. In some areas SSE may make savings by using their own equipment installed in the BT telephone exchange, but these savings are shared with all customers. The same standard broadband prices and features are available wherever you live.
SSE Fibre to the cabinet services are also available, to get these both your exchange and street cabinet must have been upgraded to support fibre. This covers more than 95% of UK homes.

SSE Unlmited Fibre - the entry level fibre deal with average speeds of 35Mb
SSE Fibre Plus - the fastest fibre broadband deal with average speeds of 63Mb
In all cases, the packages are on 18 month fixed price contracts and come with line rental. If you don't have an Openreach (BT exchange) telephone line already you'll need to pay to have one installed, this costs an additional £60 one off charge. In areas where SSE install their own equipment in telephone exchanges (LLU), you may be liable for a £36.91 one-off line conversion charge depending on the provider you're switching from.
Under the default package you pay only for landline phone calls that you make, but if you use your phone a lot you can add one of three calls packages◊. These are for Evening & Weekend Calls, Anytime Calls (calls to all UK landline and mobile numbers apart from 09 numbers), and Anytime Plus, which adds calls to 35 countries.
The deals offer unlimited usage rather than being 'truly unlimited'. This means that you can download and upload as much as you like. Although SSE have a traffic management policy in place to slow down connections making excessive use of the services, this is unlikely to affect most people. The policy primarily targets peer-to-peer file sharing traffic, and prioritises essential traffic like video calls, gaming and general browsing.
The speed available to you will vary based on various factors including the time of day (speeds are likely to be slower at peak times like evenings when lots of people are online), the wiring in your home, and the distance from your nearest telephone exchange or cabinet, with speeds decreasing the further away you are. Which package should I choose?
If you're interested in a budget provider like SSE, it's likely that cost effectiveness and value for money are important factors to you.
The SSE packages are largely no-frills offerings without much in the way of extras to entice you. This means that your main choice will be based on what speed of broadband you need.
Your choice of which of SSE's Fibre options you should choose depends on whether you have a larger or more demanding household, or if you'd simply just prefer a faster service. The standard Ultimate Fibre deal should be fast enough to allow several people to stream TV, play online games, or download large files at the same time. The faster Plus plan is the best choice for the most demanding households who live their lives online.
As always, you should get a speed estimate before you make your choice. If you're looking at the top-end Ultimate Fibre Plus plan but your estimate shows you won't get speeds much better than you could get on the middle deal, it might not be worth paying the extra money. Although, it should be noted that the upgrade to Fibre Plus can be free if you also sign up for SSE Energy at the same time.
In all cases, keep an eye on any upfront fees that might be added if you don't have a BT line or are in an area where SSE have installed their own equipment in the nearest telephone exchange.
For each plan there's the choice to add a calls package. Your decision here depends simply on whether you make many landline calls, and when you make them. If you prefer to use your mobile then you might be better off sticking with the default option of just paying for calls as and when you make them.

How often do you use your landline to make calls and at what times of day?
Are you a heavy user of streaming video or a heavy downloader?
Would you prefer a provider that can offer extras like a premium TV service as part of the same bundle?

It's always good to know upfront what you'll get when signing up with an ISP so you know what you can enjoy for free, or to budget for any extras you may want.

What are the drawbacks of SSE?
Let's face it, not everything can be perfect, and even the best deals may have a downside.
Few extras - SSE offer a free router and the arena Reward scheme with their broadband packages, but lack the extra incentives many other providers offer. Unless you're a regular of the SSE Arena or SSE Hydro, there's little to entice you. However, this more 'no frills' approach means they are able to concentrate more on the provision of your broadband and phone services.
No short contracts - All of SSE's packages are on 18 month contracts.
Limited information - There's very little detailed information on the SSE website about telephone support opening hours. We would usually recommend that customers research these before signing up to a provider, though SSE should provide you with information about what speeds your line can support during the sign-up process.
